NW Devastation began the Spring of 2007 when four boys took the initiative and sought out help from local paintball stores and fields in order to provide guidance and support. They found it with NW Ambush of Battle Ground, WA. The team has since grown to six boys ages 13 to16 and we are actively pursuing additional team members
Half of the boys are in the same Boy Scout Troop. All but one have known each other since the 2nd grade (or before) and have been playing paintball two or more years prior to Devastation's forming, though not with organized teams. As important, most of the parents have also known each other for the same time.
Once the boys proved how serious they were in pursuing the sport of paintball, the parents made a decision to find and hire a coach for the team. In order to:
1. Reduce the time it would take to become competitive.
2. To avoid and eliminate bad playing habits
3. To instill good playing habits and to initially concentrate on fundamentals
4. And most importantly, to promote good sportsmanship in the way they play on and off the field.
This approach paid off in a first and second place in the team’s first two tournaments. The team is now co-managed by three Dads and captained, on a rotating basis, by one of the boys.
Our team’s goal is to eventually compete on the national level by starting with local competitions. Our dream of competing in the Young Guns Division of the XPSL was dashed this year when the division was canceled for the rest of the year after the first event of the season. However, we competed successfully in both the 2008 Ninja and Mossback Series of tournaments this past year. Both of these series provided the team members with a well run format in which to improve their skills, work as a team and have tons of fun!!
The costs associated with the sport of paintball are higher than most any other organized sport so we are looking for sponsors that can help us provide a challange for the boys and remain competitive in the future.
